In the right below of the screen is icon for chatting, usually the rider/driver will contact you first and there are a small red dot there. Touch the icon and you can chat with the rider/driver in Bahasa Indonesia or English, both languages will appear, because Google translate automatically will translate it and I think is quite decent.
Rachittaneja has good information. I cannot try to use abroad SIM Card, because I haven't. The system for chatting between the rider/driver with the passangers is like Whatsapp. But for voice call communication, certainly needs pulse and cannot depends on the WiFi. When you install the application, both will ask about email number, Whatsapp code and Facebook name. You cannot cheat it, because they will match it.
