In several of the cases listed here, the game's developers released the source code expressly to prevent their work from becoming abandonware. Such source code is often released under varying (free and non-free, commercial and non-commercial) software licenses to the games' communities or the public; artwork and data are often released under a different license than the source code, as the copyright situation is different or more complicated. The source code may be pushed by the developers to public repositories (e.g. SourceForge or GitHub), or given to selected game community members, or sold with the game, or become available by other means. The game may be written in an interpreted language such as BASIC or Python, and distributed as raw source code without being compiled; early software was often distributed in text form, as in the book BASIC Computer Games. In some cases when a game's source code is not available by other means, the game's community "reconstructs" source code from compiled binary files through time-demanding reverse engineering techniques.

A short but sweet sci-fi adventure game, Journey to the Savage Planet unleashes players on a colorful alien world and simply asks them to explore. That's not to say the campaign is totally lacking in direction, only that it encourages freedom and discovery. Planet ARY-26 is filled with strange plants and creatures that might or might not be hostile, something players are encouraged to learn through direct contact.

Yes, Sony has confirmed PlayStation Plus will continue on the PlayStation 5 console as we saw in the PS4 era. Indeed, in November and December 2020, Bugsnax and then Worms Rumble were included for free. We've got everything you need to know about the exciting next-generation console in our PS5 review.

Unlike the PlayStation 3, the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 requires users to subscribe to Sony's PlayStation Plus service in order to play most games online. Paying for something that used to be free might not sound particularly appealing, but Sony makes up for it by offering a hearty selection of free PS3, PS4, and PS Vita games to PlayStation Plus subscribers every single month.

With the current generation of consoles so reliant on Internet connectivity, investing in a premium PlayStation Network account is something definitely worth considering. While it is free to sign up for the Network and get some basic functionality, PlayStation Plus delivers the premium access you really want.

PlayStation Plus Extra is a new, premium version of PlayStation Plus. This includes all the same perks as the base service, plus an additional 400 PS4 and PS5 games that you can download and play at no extra charge. A subscription to PlayStation Plus Extra will set you back $134.95 per year or $18.95 on a per-month basis.

While it would be nice to play online for free, there's no denying Sony packs a lot of value into each PlayStation Plus membership. In addition to the online multiplayer, PlayStation Plus subscribers get 2 free games every month for the PS4.

Once you add these games to your PlayStation account, they are yours to play for as long as you maintain your PlayStation Plus subscription. If you don't add them to your library during the month they are free, though, you'll miss out entirely.

If you haven't subscribed to PlayStation Plus before, you can take advantage of the PlayStation Plus free trial to test out the service for 14 days at no cost. You can register for the PlayStation Plus free trial through the PlayStation Store, but you'll need to add payment details to your PlayStation account if you haven't done so already.

Once you've subscribed to PlayStation Plus, each month's free games will show up automatically on your console dashboard and in the PlayStation Store under the PlayStation Plus free games section. You will notice the price of these games is now free and you can "purchase" them to add them to your PlayStation library. They will remain playable for the life of your subscription, so you don't have to worry about them disappearing at the end of the month.

PlayStation Plus compares favourably against Microsoft's Xbox Live Gold service, coming in at $10 cheaper over the term of a year and offering more free games per month. That said, the Xbox Games with Gold program tends to offer more premium AAA titles in its monthly catalogue of free games, so there is a payoff to consider there. Nintendo has yet to implement its online service for the Nintendo Switch, but it plans to offer basic online multiplayer along with a couple of free classic games every month at a budget price of $29.95 for a year. However, the depth of the service and the catalogue of available and upcoming titles is not comparable to the PlayStation 4 or the Xbox One.

However, these free games do come with a few caveats. PlayStation Plus subscribers must "purchase" a month's selection of games before that month is up. If they don't, they won't be able to go back and download those games at a later time. "Purchasing" in this case simply means loading up the PlayStation Store website, adding the free games to your cart, and checking out. It'll cost you nothing, and you'll then be able to download and play those games indefinitely, so long as you maintain an active PlayStation Plus subscription.

Tomorrow - that's even sooner that Friday - World of Tanks trundles into Europe. This free-to-play, WWII-era MMO holds the record for the most people online, on a single server, at once: 93,000. Goodness! It's bonkers and popular - Howitzer world not already going bananas for World of Tanks? There's an outside chance of a Eurogamer review.

This time around, trainers are invited to explore the brand new Paldea region, finding new people and Pokémon along the way. Promising a "sprawling land of vast open spaces" to discover, the new games appear to be heading in a more modern direction, allowing players to go freely back and forth between three different story routes and even take on the eight Gyms spread across the region in any order. More pre-order options for this one can be found here.
